Toys for a toddler
When it comes to buying toys for a toddler it can feel overwhelming. There are massive amounts of different types of toys at varying costs. I started to ask myself do we have too many toys? Not enough toys? Are these toys beneficial for development?
After seeing our collection of toys grow and noticing what my toddler engages with I wanted to share some of our favorite toddler toys.

Having limited experience with purchasing toys I started with a subscription box called Lovevery. This took the guessing out of buying toys because I knew every 3-4 months we would be getting a new set of toys to introduce. Lovevery is a toy subscription inspired by Montessori learning. What can you expect from Lovevery Toys? No flashing lights or sounds, development-based and backed in science. The pros and cons of Lovevery. The pros, it takes the guesswork out of purchasing age-appropriate, developmentally appropriate toys that are well made. The cons, depending on household budget the subscription boxes can be expensive. Another important point is your toddler may not like or gravitate toward every toy in a particular play set.

Toddler on the move

Toddlers love to move their bodies, so finding toys that encourage and facilitate movement was a given. There are toys like the Pikler ladder and balance beam to get your toddler moving and developing coordination. I have also seen how most toddlers enjoy playing with the Little Tikes cozy coupe.
Some other great toys to get your toddler moving
While I have noticed my toddler enjoys playing with these toys, I also don’t want to take away from outside play (which is free) going to a nearby park or enjoying a nature trail.
A toddlers imagination

In the beginning, I wasn’t seeking out forms of imaginative play, until my toddler came across a puppet at a local toy store. I wasn’t sure how I would use this puppet in a fun way that would resonate with my toddler. Until one day I pulled it out as we reviewed letter sounds.
I have also witnessed how much fun toddlers have playing dress up, wearing capes, using a toy stethoscope, or pretending to be a firefighter. I think at times we forget about imaginative play because we are adults, for toddlers create new stories and interesting scenarios which fosters many aspects of development.
Toddler sensory play

I discovered sensory play through many play dates and wanted to fill that gap. Thinking of all the senses I tried to select toys and create activities to stimulate and develop those senses. Using different textures, musical instruments, and sensory bins.
I was apprehensive because sensory play can be messy, however, I would curate an activity that I felt comfortable with and would provide an outlet for my toddler. Sensory play doesn’t have to be complicated. If you are new to sensory play start with a bin and fill it ( whipped cream, ice, sand, soap, and water), and then place spoons, animal figurines, small cars or trucks, spray bottles, liquid droppers, measuring cups. There are many resources online, one of my favorite places is Pinterest.
Fun learning for toddlers

As of late, I have been focusing on preparation for kindergarten and homeschool activities. I started with activity books or curriculum books and built on that. I also wanted to have some basic supplies like scissors, glue sticks, books, coloring books, and flashcards.
There is no doubt that toys play a crucial role in nurturing children’s development. Being faced with the pressures of constantly purchasing toys I have learned to be purposeful with the toys I purchase. I look for toys that facilitate using skills and learning, although it may not always be obvious. I also look for toys that can bring a connection between me and my child.
I would recommend taking a look at your child’s toy box. Is it time for a refresh? After doing our toy triage, I donated toys and put the remaining toys in storage. I have found that having minimal toys out and cycling toys has worked wonders for our household.
